Mpeketoni Attack Suspects Set Free

The Mombasa High Court has set free two main suspects in the deadly 2014 Mpeketoni terror attack in Lamu County.

Dyana Salim, a driver, and businessman Mahadi Swaleh alias Jesus were acquitted on all counts against them after being found innocent by the court.

Justice Martin Muya cited lack of enough evidence to sentence the two who were faced with 60 counts of murder, in the case that had been ongoing for more than one year.

“In conclusion I find that this case has not been proved beyond reasonable doubt against the two accused person on all the 60 counts of murder. The accused persons are found not guilty of murder and they are acquitted accordingly,” Muya ruled

In January, the same court had ruled that there was sufficient evidence to charge the suspects after the prosecution team led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alexander Muteti, presented 32 witnesses.

The suspects were accused of having participated in carrying out the night attack in which more than 60 people lost their lives besides destruction of property.
