Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri excited mourners during the burial of the late Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua when he revealed that former President Mwai Kibaki paid his fees at the University level.
When eulogising the late governor, Kiunjuri disclosed that it was Kibaki who paid his school fees but lightly stated that the former President failed to clear the fees during his final year at the University of Nairobi (UON).
The former President, watched in silence as the Devolution CS made the revelations while the crowd broke in laughter.
Kiunjuri, a former Member of Parliament (MP), also narrated how the late Governor helped him master political courage after a by-election in 2012.
According to the Devolution CS, he and Gachagua decided to challenge a candidate from the Party of National Unity (PNU) who had the backing of "the man who had catered for his fees" (referring to Kibaki.)
Kiunjuri noted that they lost in the elections but observed that it was Gachagua's courage and stand that made them front a candidate endorsed by Kibaki.
The former Laikipia-East MP termed the late Governor as one of the most determined leaders in Kenya who initiated change in the country.
64-year old Gachagua was laid to rest in Mathira, Nyeri County and his burial was attended by various dignitaries led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
