Nairobi Driver Threatens to Shoot Officers During Alcoblow Operation

A Nairobi driver surprised police officers on Saturday night after pulling out a gun during a crackdown by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Jackson Mwangi is said to have been flagged down at Survey area along Thika Road and was requested to blow the breathalyser commonly known as alcoblow.

Instead of obliging, the motorist turned on the NTSA officials with a pistol and vowed to kill anyone who tried to get near him.

According to police officers, Mwangi who was driving a Toyota Premio during the 4am incident, cocked his loaded firearm and threatened to shoot two officers.

He was however, arrested, disarmed and his gun licence certificate confiscated before being taken to Pangani Police Station where he was booked.

“The same was disarmed and a Browning pistol loaded with six rounds of ammunition in the magazine and one round lodged in the chamber,” read the police report.

The suspect was on Monday presented in court for the offences of threatening to shoot, resisting arrest and refusing to use the alcoblow.

The drama came a few months after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet advised all NTSA officers to be accompanied by security agents during crackdown to effectively manage such a situation.

This comes several months after some NTSA officials including Director General Francis Mejja, were abducted by matatu crew during an operation before being dumped, though unharmed, in a bush within the City.
