Nairobi Government 'Harasses' Widower Out of Home

Nairobi County Government is on the spot after its officials allegedly harassed a landlord in Ngong Road area and forcefully auctioned his property without his knowledge or that of his tenants.

According to details shared on Monday by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, the 8.5-acre land which housed 8 maisonettes and a playground, was sold to Attain Advisory Consultant Limited at Sh30 Million while the owner, Mohedin Hawa, was in India seeking treatment for his now late wife.

"The said parcel land was dubiously auctioned by Nairobi City Council while I was attending to my late wife in India. The purpoted public aution was done without my knowledge or any of my tenants and or my family memmbers," read the letter to Sonko in part.

In the video released by the Nairobi Senator, Mr Hawa expressed how exasperated he was after allegedly being harassed continously by police officers, county officials and goons hired by the government; forcing him to pay rent for his own home.

Tenants at his upmarket home also complained of the unorthodox means used by the County officials to force them to pay rent to the new landlord who was unknown to them.

“They brought in guys from Kibera to remove things from our houses if we failed to pay rent to them...We have not even seen any official letter showing us that ownership has now changed to this other person,” said one of the aggrieved tenants.

They claimed that they were forced to sign lease agreements and attempts to stop the lease in court was dismissed, on grounds that they were not eligible to participate in the dispute.

Attempts by Kenyans.co.ke to obtain a comment from the City Government were unfruitful as officials declined to speak on the matter.

However, Senator Sonko assured Mr Hawa that he would follow up the matter to ensure justice.
