Nakumatt chain of supermarkets has temporarily closed down its Ukay branch in Westlands area after the outlet was hit by flash floods that swept into the shopping centre.

On Sunday, Regional Operations and Strategy Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy announced the indefinite closure advising customers around Westlands and Parklands to shop at the nearby Nakumatt Highridge Supermarket.

"Arising from the flash flooding challenges experienced in parts of Nairobi and specifically at the Ukay Centre shopping mall in the Westlands business district, last night (Saturday), Nakumatt Holdings, wishes to confirm the temporary suspension of operations at Nakumatt Ukay Supermarket," he said.

Following the unprecedented move, the management stated that they had also adjusted the operating times at Nakumatt Westgate.

"Customers at Nakumatt Westgate will enjoy an extended opening hour regime, with a daily branch opening at 7am and closing at midnight," Ramamurthy said.

The flooding incident reportedly damaged goods valued at millions of shillings at the supermarket with at least ten cars that were parked outside the mall being affected.  However, no injury was reported.
