Nyeri County Nurses Begin Strike

Nurses in Nyeri County have gone on strike over what they term as the County Government's failure to address their grievances.

The nurses accused the county leadership of delaying their promotion process, adding that they would not return to work until their needs are heard and taken seriously.

“We were told that we would be promoted by September last year and each one of us was taken through interviewing process, something not witnessed in other counties. To date, we are still crying over the same,” Secretary of the Kenya Union of Nurses Nyeri branch, Beatrice Nduati stated.

She claimed that the county government had been ignoring they grievances hence prompting them to go on strike.

Ms Nduati further demanded that the county addresses the issue of understaffing of nurses and ensure health facilities and equipment that are not working are repaired.

“Over 400 nurses have left the service either as result death, resignation or retirement with no replacement for them so far. We cannot continue working that way,” she lamented.

Nyeri County Referral Hospital was one of the hard-hit facilities, leading to transfer of patients to private hospitals.
