Olive Mugenda Rejects Sh100 Million Kenyatta University Reward

Former Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Olive Mugenda has declined to take a hefty retirement package proposed by the institution.

The university's Director of Communication Machua Koinange confirmed that Ms Mugenda had declined to accept the package, saying that she had received enough commendations especially on social media and she was just doing her job, therefore did not deserve any special treatment.

“She had said she didn’t see the need of such a package since she was doing her job as a public servant who expected no special treatment upon her retirement,” stated Koinange.

The University Council had reportedly decided to offer a Sh100 Million send off package, as an appreciation for her development record during her 10-year tenure at the helm of KU's leadership.

According to media reports, the former VC was to receive among others a Sh10 Million vehicle, a residential home in an area of her choice worth Sh20 Million and a 10-day holiday to her preferred destination accompanied by a spouse or friend.

However, the institution's administration dismissed the proposal which had caused outrage on social media, but refused to divulge the amount it was offering her.

Mugenda's tenure at the University came to an end on Sunday following a successful decade as Vice Chancellor, in which she initiated several development projects.
