Owner of Collapsed Huruma Building Surrenders

The owner of the Huruma building which collapsed on Friday night has finally been arrested. Samuel Kamau surrendered himself at Pangani Police Station in Nairobi.

Kamau, who reportedly owns four other buildings close to the ill-fated one, was then taken in for interrogation.

His arrest follows strict orders by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery after the tragic accident, which displaced close to 1000 households.

Rescue operations by the Kenya Red Cross Society are still continuing and the death toll has since reached 21 while 65 other people are unaccounted for.

135 residents were rescued from the debris and taken to hospital where they have been receiving treatment.

The unfortunate incident was highly condemned by the public, with Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero being put to task to explain how such a sub-standard building got authorization from the County Government.

Kidero, who indicated that his Government would take full responsibility, stated that the responsible quality assurance officers would be fired for failing to demolish the flat which had been earmarked in 2014.
