PHOTOS: Chaos at Chuka University, Bus Burnt

Chaos erupted at Chuka University in Tharaka Nithi County after a section of students rioted destroying school property and looting from the neighbourhood.

The protest, which began on Monday morning, escalated after the students burnt down the University's bus and started looting property from business establishments around the area.

Anti-riot police officers had to be called in to quell the skirmishes where more than 15 students were arrested, bringing learning activities to a standstill.

The mayhem reportedly erupted after Kennedy Waringa, one of the Chairmanship aspirants in the University Student Council elections, contested the outcome over lack of transparency.

Following the unrest, the varsity's administration ordered for indefinate closure of the campus instructing all students to vacate the premises before Monday afternoon.

In October, a similar incident was witnessed at the Technical University of Mombasa where students went on rampage complaining over deregistration of students, a move they termed as an academic injustice.

A number of learners were injured in a confrontation with police officers and County government officials with two vehicles being set on fire.
