Students of Technical University of Mombasa on Monday morning went on rampage protesting new regulations on academic matters including deregistration of students in what they termed as academic injustices.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the Secretary General of the Student Council, Hillary Nyang'or said that the university had deregistered close to 1000 students between June and September this year over petty issues.

Nyang'or added that the administration had also scrapped off supplementary and special exams, a move that would be a burden for students who missed sitting for examinations.

“Imagine a student who was unable to pay fee in full by the time exams are on, will now have to sit for 16 papers, eight carried forward to another semester,” said the student leader.

He also faulted the institution’s administration for increasing fees in the middle of the semester affecting students taking Science courses.

In the protest, two vehicles were set on fire with one being a garbage lorry belonging to the County Government of Mombasa. A number of students were also injured during the confrontation with the police and County Government officials.

The President of the Students' Council Desmond Ocharo however, denied the involvement of students saying that hooligans took advantage of the situation to cause destruction.

The university was closed indefinitely after a memo released by Vice Chancellor Prof Josphat Mwatela required all students to vacate the halls of residence before 10am.

However, the memo stated that Kwale and Lamu campuses were not affected by the directive.

This unrest happens days after students of Maseno University destroyed property at the main campus with two student reported dead during the skirmishes.
