PHOTOS: CORD Protestors Caught Robbing

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have been criticised after cases of robbery were reported on Nairobi streets.

In photos circulating online, a section of the protestors was captured harassing members of the public by snatching valuables.

Several people reported having spotted some rioters vandalising vehicles, stealing mobile phones and other valuables from passers-by who were not part of the demonstrations.

Similar cases were reported last week where several shops were closed as owners took precaution to prevent looting.

Earlier on, police had indicated that a number of youths were armed and had planned to take advantage of the situation to steal from businesses along various streets.

Officers who had been deployed to guard the IEBC offices dispersed the big crowd that had gathered along University way before Opposition leaders could make addresses.

Newly acquired water cannons and tear gas were used to disrupt the gathering. During the mayhem, CORD leader Raila Odinga's vehicle was hit on the windscreen with claims flaring that live bullets were used.

In the same chaos, at least 15 people were arrested and 6 motorbikes confiscated. The authorities didn't divulge whether the suspects would be arraigned in court.
