Four Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers who survived the Friday morning attack by Al Shabaab militants were on Sunday airlifted from Somalia to Nairobi for treatment.
The soldiers were received by Chief of Defence Forces Samson Mwathethe and Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo.
The four are among other soldiers who were critically injured in the deadly attack on an African Union base in El Adde, Somalia, where an unknown number of army personnel perished.
Speaking after receiving the KDF soldiers, CS Omamo stated that other soldiers were earlier flown in via Moi Air Base.
The Defence CS urged Kenyans to be calm and let the government inform families of the fallen soldiers first before making the names public.
"Allow the families privacy as they mourn. Full details of those injured and killed will be made public after families affected are notified." Omamo stated.
Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery cautioned social media users against sharing the photos, warning that the government would take action against those found sharing the gory images.
Mwathethe vowed to relentlessly pursue the militants noting that KDF is currently in hot pursuit of the terrorists.
The militants reportedly rammed a suicide bomb car onto the gate of the base after which they gained entry, sparking heavy gunfire exchange at the camp.
In a press statement posted by the Ministry of Defence, the camp was ambushed at around 4am with sporadic gunfire being reported several hours afterwards.
The statement by KDF Spokesman David Obonyo further indicated that the number of casualties on both ends was unknown.
