Police Arrest Terror Suspect in Mombasa, Recover Weapons

Kenya’s Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) has raided a house in Mombasa and arrested a wanted terror suspect said to have been planning an attack.

According to sources, the police acting on a tip-off from the members of the public raided the house in Likoni and apprehended the suspect, Juma Athman, at around 5.30pm on Friday.

The officers had reportedly been trailing the suspect for a while before they finally caught up with him.

During the operation, the security agents recovered an assortment of weapons including two grenades, 10 bullets, an AK 47 rifle, a jungle jacket and a pair of binoculars.

The police also reportedly seized his passport and assorted CDs with materials alleged to be radicalisation content.

Athman was taken to Likoni police station for further questioning.

The arrest comes a week after the police urged Kenyans to be on high alert after reports suggested that 9 Kenyan terrorists who had joined Al Shabaab terror group in Somalia could be headed back to the country to launch attacks.

Police Spokesman George Kinoti confirmed that security forces were on a high alert after receiving intelligence that the terrorists were planning an attack.

Kinoti stated that the police believed that the Al-Shabaab were planning retaliatory attacks in Kenya and suspected that the group of 9 terrorists might be on their way to Kenya or were already here.
