Police Impostor to Vie for MP

A police impostor serving a 5-year jail term has announced that he will be running for a Parliamentary seat in next year's General Election.

Joshua Waiganjo, who has only served 6 months of his sentence, declared that he will vie for the Njoro parliamentary seat in 2017.

Addressing the media at the Nakuru Law Courts on Monday during one of his court appearances, Waiganjo said that nothing stood in his way to unseat the current Njoro MP, Joseph Kiuna.

“My being in court is not a hindrance at all,” he told the Nation.

In regard to convicted persons seeking to be MPs, the Constitution stipulates that: A person is disqualified from being elected a member of Parliament if the person is subject to a sentence of imprisonment of at least six months, as at the date of registration as a candidate, or at the date of election.

Waiganjo was jailed after he was found guilty by a Naivasha court for impersonating an assistant commissioner of police unnoticed for years.

Following his announcement, Waiganjo adds to the list of persons accused of criminal activities using publicity earned through courts to declare their interest in politics.

Recently, fake doctor Mugo wa Wairimu, who was accused of sedating and raping a patient, declared his interest in the Roysambu parliamentary seat, claiming that many people wanted him to run for the position.

“This is not my decision, but a desire by people who have faith in me. Given this pressure, I will not hesitate to join the race. I do not want to disappoint them," he posted on Facebook.

Wairimu was arrested on September 10 for impersonating a gynaecologist at his Prestige Health Care Clinic in Githurai 44, Nairobi, where he accused of raping sedated patients.
