Police Issue Alert Over Stolen UN Number Plates

Inspector General Joseph Boinnet issued a security alert on Friday over stolen number plates of diplomatic in Kilifi and Mombasa areas, stating that they may be used in terrorism activities.

According to a statement read by Kenya Police Spokesman, Charles Owino, the plates registered as 45 UN 177K and 45 UN 130K were plucked off from United Nation (UN) vehicles at parking lots.

“Following the current terror trends worldwide and the alerts that we have lately released, we hold strong opinion that these plates may be used by terrorists in attempts to gain access into security areas and key installations,” Mr Owino said.

Addressing the media at Vigilance House, Owino stated that all vehicles including, diplomatic, government and parastatal ones would be subjected to thorough searches whenever accessing any entrances building.

The directive which also extended to private security firms, ordered that if vehicles bearing the stolen number plates are found, they should be stopped, detained and occupants interrogated.

Mr Owino further stated that all embassies and foreign missions to report any loss of vehicle number plates immediately after discovery of theft.
