Police Dodge Questioning Joho in Robbery Case

Police have now backtracked on earlier summons they had issued against Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, directing him to record a statement against a robbery with violence case in Malindi.

On Wednesday evening, the police department announced that they had directed Governor Joho not to record the statement, owing to the high security alertness, occasioned by terror attack threats.

"Malindi police have notified Governor Hassan Joho of Mombasa that owing to the current heightened state of alertness against terror attacks, the statement he had been asked to record will be taken at a later date and place to be advised," the police statement read in part.

However, Joho indicated that he would proceed to Malindi despite the police order, adding that police cannot send a notice at night whereas he had made plans to travel there.

The Opposition heavyweight disclosed that in his statement, he would tell police he has 'nothing to say'.

While the fresh directive to Joho left some questioning how terror alertness would influence police readiness to question the governor, the security department warned the general public against crowding around any police station or camp.

The Mombasa County boss had been summoned to appear before police on Tuesday, but he responded saying he was busy and would only record the statement on Thursday.

"I just received a call on Monday that I should appear at Malindi Police Station. But I want to say that I cannot do so because I am busy. I can only go there on Thursday at 2pm."

"These people must know that I am the Governor of Mombasa and I cannot just be ordered around by anyone. I have a constitutional mandate to serve the people first and anything else comes second," Joho had stated.

He was summoned alongside six other Opposition politicians, with reports indicating that they could all be arrested and charged following several incidents of violence and robbery during the Malindi by-election.

Other leaders wanted in regard to the matter are Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nasir Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, Woman Representative Aisha Jumwa and Senator Stewart Madzayo, MPs Suleiman Dori (Msambweni) andAgostino Neto (Ndhiwa).
