Politicians Reward Girlfriends With Nominations, MP Reveals

A Member of Parliament (MP) has exposed how nominations in Kenyan political parties are marred by a bias, with politicians favouring their girlfriends.

Meru Women Representative Florence Kajuju spilled the interesting revelations, saying that the current regulations were unable to prevent party leaders from rewarding their friends.

According to Kajuju, leaders of political parties have been awarding their female friends with positions in the Senate, National Assembly and in the County Assemblies.

Addressing aspiring female MCAs in Meru County, the MP blamed the partisan nominations for the current crop of women in appointed positions who lack commitment in service delivery.

“The nominations pull back the drive to increase the number of elected women leaders because the nominated did not have the ambition to lead,” she was quoted by the Standard.

She urged that the law be tightened to address the issue, to ensure legitimate and able leaders are elected to leadership positions.

Kajuju's claims come as MPs continue to discuss the contentious two-thirds majority rule, which dictates that a single gender should not dominate in the private and public sectors.

The regulation, which has been heavily supported by female lawmakers, will help in ensuring gender parity in Parliament among other public offices if well implemented.
