Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has disclosed that he was shocked after finding out that Principals and Head teachers were declining to register their students to sit for the national exams this year.
Speaking during a public forum, Matiang’i said that he was surprised that teachers would decline to register their own students for KCSE/KCPE despite government's assurance that it would cater for the examination fees.
The no-nonsense CS threatened disciplinary action against primary and secondary school headteachers who declined to register students on grounds of failure to clear examination fees.
"The government will pay examination fees for all candidates who will be sitting for their KCSE and KCPE this year. No child should be sent home for not paying the examination fees," Matiang’i affirmed.
The CS pointed out that only 350,000 candidates had registered for the KCPE this year which is far below the target.
Matiang’i urged parents to ensure that all candidates had been registered and report any teacher to his ministry if they demanded money from them.
