Deadly Protests In Burundi Following Presidents Bid For Third Term

Thousands took to the streets in Burundi's capital Bujumbura a day after President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would be seeking a third term in office.

Angry protestors defied a protest ban by the government and clashed with police officers, throwing stones and lighting fires on the street.

Police officers had to use tear gas, water canons and live ammunition to disperse the crowds. Two people died as a result with several others getting injured.

Opposition leaders claim that the presidents bid for a third term in office is unconstitutional and that the bid threatens the 2005 peace deal that ended a 12 year civil war.

President Nkurunziza was nominated by his governing CNDD-FDD party to run in the elections slated for June.

Burundi's constitution only allows the president to be elected twice.
