REVEALED: NGOs 'Stealing' Money From Donors

An audit has revealed how most local Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have allegedly been stealing money from local and foreign aid donors.

The audit conducted by NGOs Co-ordination Board on 10,015 local organisations indicated that some of the NGOs, had two separate bank accounts where money from one of them went unaccounted for.

The Board's Chief Executive Officer, Fazul Mohamed, said that the NGOs were cheating the government by using two sets of accounts. Mohamed said that the organisations used one of the accounts to hide money from the Government, while the legitimate one was submitted to the Government.

Close to 957 NGOs were found to have money estimated at Sh25.6 Billion. Among them was former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka's Foundation which failed to account for Sh64 Million.

An organisation that had a Children's orphanage and mainly focused on giving bursaries to poor children was also among the 957 blacklisted.

Some of other notable NGOs that featured in the list were Ahadi Trust, known for the fight against jiggers in the country that had a sum of Sh84 Million unaccounted for, Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) which also could not give an explanation for Sh1.2 Billion in their account.

Others included Africa Development Solutions with Sh9.7 Billion, Deaf Aid with Sh164 Million, Africa Population and Health Research with Sh5.8 Billion.
