Ruto's ICC Case Brewing Trouble in The Jubilee Coalition

The Deputy President's case at the International Criminal Court is threatening to rip the Jubilee Coalition apart.

A section of MPs from the United Republican Party (URP) have in the last one week been accusing the government of not fighting hard in  William Ruto's case as it did for the President.

It is reported that 60 MPs from the Rift Valley are planning to attend a prayer meeting for Mr Ruto on Sunday in which only Members of Parliament from the region have been invited.

However, while attending a funeral in Kiambu County, a group of The National Alliance Party legislators said that they would be joining their counterparts at the prayer meeting in what is seen as a move to tighten the weakening ties in the ruling coalition.

“We know where we have come from politically and we know where we are going,” Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi told mourners at the burial.

On Tuesday Bomet Central MP Ronald Tonui accompanied by three other URP MPs told the press that he wondered why there was no active lobbying by the government to free their Party leader since the President's case was dropped.

“I want to address the local dynamics. It seems after dropping of the two cases, that of the President and Francis Muthaura, we are no longer seeing the country's top leadership, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lobbying. It looks like the DP has been dumped," Tunoi claimed.

The TNA members in response felt that those claiming that government had abandoned the Deputy President are not comfortable with the plans to drop the two parties for the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP).

On Wednesday President Uhuru Kenyatta asked the leaders of URP and TNA to dissolve their parties, join JAP and share out the leadership positions.

The ICC recently allowed the prosecution team to include past evidence in the case against William Ruto, a matter that has gotten the DP's allies worried leading to the traded accusations between the two factions.

Ruto is facing charges of crimes against humanity he allegedly committed during the 2007/2008 post election violence, in which more than 1500 Kenyans lost their lives.
