Scheme to Rig Nominations in Jubilee Party Strongholds Revealed

Tension has hit Jubilee party strongholds in the Central region after details emerged on an alleged plot to rig the party primaries scheduled for Friday.

A section of aspirants in Nyeri County on Sunday told journalists that already marked ballots were being circulated in the county, while their counterparts in Laikipia County expressed fears over an alleged plot to rig the primaries to favor the incumbents.

Nyeri Senator hopeful Nyamu Wambugu and Nyeri Town parliamentary hopeful Duncan Maina accused the party's Secretariat and the police of not taking action, despite their full knowledge that duplicated ballot papers had already been printed and distributed in Mathira, Tetu and Nyeri Town constituencies.

"Ballot papers are being circulated. We have raised the issue with the party and police but no action has been taken," Mr Maina accused.

Government officials and religious leaders are accused of aiding in the circulation of the said ballot papers.

"We know there are papers Konyu, Magutu and Iria-ini and a chief, a reverend and a bishop are involved in their circulation," reported Cathy Irungu, a parliamentary hopeful from Mathira constituency.

Laikipia business professionals have released a statement accusing Governor Joshua Irungu of working with Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri to manipulate the nominations.

"Kiunjuri recently invited Laikipia County MCAs and instructed them to campaign for Mr Irungu's re-election. in return, the ward representatives will be rigged in during the nominations," the statement read in part.

Central Region Police Coordinator Larry Kieng', however, dismissed the accusations leveled against the security agencies.

"This is politics at play. We have been receiving calls from politicians accusing one another of planning to interfere with the nominations but none wants to come forward and make an official complaint and give information about the fake ballot papers," Mr Kieng' explained.
