Senate Approves Bill Meant To Regulate Harambees

The senate has passed The Fundraising Appeals Bill that seeks to ensure there is complete transparency and accountability in how fundraisers are conducted.

If enacted, the bill will require individuals to get a license from an established County committee. The bill also indicates that the individuals must state the purpose of the fundraiser and keep records of how the collected funds are used.

According to Capital Fm, there was a major concern from senators during the debate that elected leaders could be tempted to use county funds in such harambees. The bill would therefore ensure that there is no misuse of tax payers' money.

The Bill sponsored by Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o intends to reduce the dependance of most Kenyans on fundraisers.

The bill will now be taken to the National Assembly for debate and if passed transmitted to the President for assent.
