Senator Mike Sonko Could Resign

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on Thursday threatened to resign over the alleged brutal harassment of hawkers by City County Askaris.

Sonko gave the City Government a 24- hour ultimatum to take action against the rogue officers who have been cruelly injuring and allegedly causing death of traders operating in the Central Business District.

“I am saddened by the manner in which Nairobi city askaris are intimidating, harassing and brutally murdering hawkers."

“I have given the concerned authorities a 24-hr notice to arrest the culprits failure to which I will be left with no alternative but to tender my resignation to the Senate Speaker,” Sonko posted on Facebook.

The outspoken lawmaker, who has been on a renewed drive to put Governor Evans Kidero's government on check, firmly stated that the recurrent inhumane treatment of traders should be stemmed.

“My friend Governor Kidero must ensure corrupt officers at City Hall are sacked. It is high time the Nairobi City County Assembly made laws that will help in the regulation and protection of hawker's activities and interests,” he stated.

The Nairobi County Askaris have over time been put on the spot following recurrent incidences of brutal assault.
