Slum Dweller 'Hits Jackpot' After Selling Stray Dog

A slum dweller at Mukuru kwa Njenga in Nairobi has gotten a breakthrough from abject poverty after selling for a handsome amount, a stray puppy he had adopted.

Mworia Kibagendi, who has been doing odd jobs to earn a living, hit the 'jackpot' when a white man residing in Muthaiga bought his puppy at Sh180,000.

According to the man, he bumped into the young dog one evening while on his way home from work. After taking care of it for a while, he listed it on OLX (a free advertising website) with the help of a neighbour. That is how the mzungu came across it.

With a family that is constantly grappling with financial constraints, Mr Kibagendi noted that it was a lifetime opportunity when a potential buyer came knocking.

“Of course money for raising my big family has always been a huge challenge. Currently, getting money to take my son to school was my greatest challenge,” he told the Standard.

Since the man sold the puppy, he had become a celebrity in the area with neighbours in the slum seeking his advice on the dog business.

Mr Kibagendi noted that the amount he made from the sale was beyond his expectation, adding that some of his neighbours believed he had joined a cult where members were given money in exchange for rituals, claims he laughed off.

Nonetheless, the father of four, who has been working at industrial area has resorted to quitting the odd jobs he has been doing for years. Inspired by the sales, he now wants to seek more capital to start a business of raising and selling exotic puppies.
