Strathmore Now in Trouble with Nairobi County Gov't

Strathmore University has found itself on the wrong side of the Nairobi County Government after Monday's tragic security drill which left one person dead and scores injured.

The county government firmly stated that the security drill carried out in the varsity was illegal as it had not been informed of the exercise as required by the law.

“Under schedule 4 within the constitution, fire and disaster management issues were devolved to the counties so the drill that was conducted at the University should have sought clearance from City Hall too,” The county's chief officer in charge of fire and rescue, Brian Esali said.

Esali indicated that the county was carrying out a separate investigations from that of the Interior Ministry and would take legal action against Strathmore upon completion.

“Our investigation and intelligence department will initiate investigations into the matter and stern legal action will be taken against those who have contravened the law,” Esali was quoted by the Business Daily.

Esali added that the School would have to explain under which law they got the authorization to conduct the botched security drill.

Strathmore's authorization to carry out the drill raised many questions after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, refuted claims that the univesity had informed the police of the exercise.

In a statement, Boinnet ordered for probe stating that though drills were essential for any institution, high protocol authorization must be sought before being carried out.
