Nairobi Police Commander Japheth Koome confirmed the incident and stated the police were acting on a tip-off from the public that the gang was hiding inside a house in the area.

"They started shooting from their hideout when officers cornered them," Koome.

The commander said one suspect escaped and cautioned the public to be on the look out. A pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition was recovered.

Sergeant Abdiaziz Hussein, who was heading home from the Eastleigh Airbase Chief Camp where he was stationed, was shot three times after he boarded a matatu unaware that it was carjacked.
