A matatu tout was sentenced to death in a Nairobi court for stabbing a passenger to death over Ksh 100 change.
The court determined that David Gatembo Mbeti killed Antonius Odhiambo after they got into an argument over the amount of change Mbeti was supposed to have returned to Odhiambo.
Mbeti was supposed to return 160 shillings from the 200 shillings Odhiambo had given him, but instead returned only 60 shillings.
An argument ensued after Odhiambo asked for the rest but Mbeti insisted he had returned all of the change. Mbeti then punched Odhiambo before stabbing him using a screwdriver.
Mbeti had however pleaded not guilty claiming Odhiambo had been hit by another passenger before the driver threw an object at him, killing him.
According to The Daily Nation, Justice Nicholas Ombija dismissed Mbeti’s claims.
The incident happened inside a public service vehicle on Mombasa Road in Nairobi on the night of January 8, 2011.
