TSC to Recruit 70,000 Teachers as Unions Remain Defiant

The Teachers Service Commission has announced that it would be hiring 70,000 teachers on a three month contract following the ongoing teachers' strike.

In a statement TSC said that it would seek services of  50,000 teachers for primary schools and 20,000 others for secondary schools to curb the effects of the current industrial action.

Eligible persons for the advertised positions should be; Kenyan citizens aged 45 years and below, have original Professional and Academic Certificates, and be registered as a teacher as per Section 23 of the Teachers Service Commission Act.

All applications should reach TSC not later than 5th October 2015.

The Commission further indicated that the applicants might be considered for permanent employment when vacancies arise.

The announcement by TSC follows the teachers' unions dismissal of the industrial court's ruling to suspend the strike for 90 days and hold conciliatory meetings with stakeholders so as to reach an agreement.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and their counterpart the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) instructed their members to stay put until the unions directed otherwise.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion further demanded TSC to withdraw their appeal case against the 50-60 per cent pay rise before they could hold any discussions.
