Government Decides To Recruit Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a directive to education officials across the country to compile a list of all teachers in public schools by Wednesday, who are not employed by the government.

According to the circular released on Tuesday, the list is required to have names of qualified teachers under the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) payroll, and those under the Board of Management (BOM).

The teachers' employer heeded the request of over 100,000 teachers under the parents' payroll who had asked to be recruited as they were willing to earn the minimum wage turned down by teachers.

Kenya Parents and Teachers Association Secretary General Isaack Wangengi confirmed that the teachers earned less than Sh10,000 and they were eager to work for the Government.

“We can take up that Sh16,000 that other teachers have refused because to us it is a raise,” he stated.

Wangengi affirmed that the teachers were well trained graduates, but failed to be employed because TSC favoured those who had graduated earlier.

The move by the Government gave rise to speculation on whether the 280,000 striking teachers would be out of jobs or if the TSC simply needed invigilators for National Examinations which are now underway.
