Uhuru Announces Steps to Resolve IEBC Stalemate

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced measures that his government will employ in a bid to end the ongoing stalemate regarding the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Addressing a press conference at State House on Wednesday, the Head of State stated that after consultation with Speakers of both Houses and religious leaders, they decided to form committee which will be tasked with solving the IEBC tussle.

"...a Joint Select Committee of both houses of Parliament be set up in accordance with the standing orders of both houses. The mandate of the committee will be strictly and exclusively the matter of IEBC," Kenyatta announced.

The President added that on Thursday, he would convene a Jubilee Parliamentary Group meeting to choose representatives to the committee adding, "we expect that other initiatives by Parliament will harmonise their work within the framework of the joint select committee".

Mr Kenyatta further asserted that all private and public stakeholders including civil society groups were invited to present their views on how to restructure the IEBC.

He insisted that the Constitution was the supreme law and respecting it should not be an option, welcoming the CORD coalition for dialogue within the law.

Responding to the steps taken by the President, Opposition leader Raila Odinga indicated that his group would issue a statement on Thursday to announce whether they would put the weekly protests on hold.
