Uhuru Directs Youth With Waiting Cards to Register as Voters

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday reportedly directed young people without Identification cards to head to registration centers and register as voters.

Speaking during his mass voter registration drive at Magumu Trading Centre in Nyandarua County, Mr Kenyatta stated that youth with waiting slips should be allowed to register as voters as they await their ID cards.

"I am now saying even an applicant with a waiting card — as long as it has a serial number — go and register as a voter," Kenyatta was quoted by the Daily Nation.

Kenyatta's directive comes at a time the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) second phase of the mass voter registration is almost closing with only four days remaining.

However, when IEBC was questioned on social media whether it was acceptable to use waiting cards in registration but the Commission noted that it was illegal.

@Disembe Waiting Cards don't have ID numbers & hence will be rejected at the end @IEBCKenya ezraCHILOBA @wchebukati @RobertAlai @BobGodec

The  mass registration is scheduled to end on February 14 after which the electoral body will verify the data.
