Uhuru Launches Development Projects in Mombasa

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday commissioned several multi-billion projects in Mombasa County despite being lectured by area Governor Hassan Joho for seemingly abandoning the region.

Kenyatta, who has been in the Coastal region since the festive season, started the day with launching the Buxton Footbridge, the first footbridge in the County, which he said had cost more than Sh600 Million.

The President also commissioned a 27 KM non-motorized transport including Bamburi Storm Water drainage and High Mast Floodlights as well as the Ziwa la Ng’ombe informal settlement improvement project.

Addressing residents at the Footbridge, Kenyatta stated that the projects, which were funded by the government in collaboration with the World Bank, would cost more Sh3.2 Billion.

“The money that we shall use for restructuring, doing slum upgrading and building footpaths will exceed Sh3.2 Billion,” he stated.

The Head of State also highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of Bachuma Gate-Maji ya Chumvi section of the Nairobi-Mombasa Road, tarmacking of Mwatate-Taveta Road and the first phase of Miritini-Kipevu dual carriageway, with two interchanges and an access road to the Moi International Airport (MIA), as some of the projects which reflect his Governments agenda.

Additionally, he also said that he would soon commission the construction of Malindi-Lamu Road which would be the first tarmacked road in Lamu County.

The President noted that Kenya and the Tanzanian Government were looking for funds for construction of the Malindi–Bagamoyo Highway which he said would ease transport between the two countries.

This came after Kenyatta was given a dress down by Joho who insisted that some of the projects were old and had been launched before the Jubilee government took over power.

The ODM Deputy party leader challenged the President to show proof of any projects his government had initiated in the area.
