A second-year university student and his girlfriend were found dead at the girl's house in Igembe Central, Meru County.
The two were discovered lying on the floor with a herbicide and a bottle of juice on the table.
According to Igembe Central OCPD Patrick Mbarire, the young man, a student at Mount Kenya University Nkubu campus, had apparently hanged himself but fell on the floor when the rope could no longer sustain his weight.
The OCPD however stated that they were yet to determine who killed the other.
The mother of the deceased girl said that she was aware of the relationship between her daughter - Ann Kendi - and the late Dennis Kirimi and had even prepared a meal for the couple on Wednesday.
Geoffrey Meme, Karimi's father expressed his shock on hearing that the son was actually still in the village.
“I had no idea he was still around. I gave him fees on Tuesday to go to school, so I am shocked to learn that he was in the village,” he said.
Area chief John Kirimi said the findings of investigations would establish what really happened.
