More drama has emerged within the ruling party after election officials overruled the party's Secretary General Cleaophas Malala over the postponement of party primaries in West Pokot.
In a statement that was posted on UDA's official social media accounts, Executive Director, Nicodemus Bore, urged the party members to ignore earlier communications that had been issued by Malala on the election postponement.
The official indicated that a decision to postpone the party primaries could only be made by the National Elections Board which was constituted by President William Ruto early in April.
"Pursuant to and in accordance with the Constitution, the Election and Nomination rules and of the UDA Party, Elections are the sole and exclusive responsibility of the National Elections Board.
"We advise members of the Party to disregard and ignore any notice or Communication emanating from any other office and purporting to address matters concerning elections. Any such Notice must be signed and authorised by the National Elections Board Chairman," read the statement in part.
Bore's statement was in reference to Malala's earlier communication where the SG had informed the public that the elections in West Pokot had been postponed following a petition filed with the elections dispute organ.
In his statement, Malala asserted that the decision was taken by the party.
Therefore, the latest public differences raise concerns in the party given that Malala is the official spokesperson of the party owing to his role as Secretary General.
"In adherence to the UDA Party constitution and to respect the integrity of the party's organs. we hereby postpone the planned constituency elections in the affected constituencies to a later date that will be communicated by the National Elections Board.
"We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period. The UDA Party is committed to resolving this issue in a manner that reflects our dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law," read the statement in part.
Hacking Claims
Following the communication by the executive director, a video of Malala circulated on social media where it was alleged that the party's social media pages had been hacked.
However, this position was refuted by Dennis Itumbi.
"The United Democratic Alliance pages are safe across social media. Ignore anyone saying anything to the contrary," Dennis Itumbi stated.
Party Differences
In recent weeks, Kenyans have witnessed a fallout between allies of the President and those of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In particular, a section of Ruto's allies such as Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja have accused the DP of intimidation.
Following the incident, Malala issued a caution to leaders over their public differences, further stating that the party would be taking disciplinary action against them.
Notably, other allies of the DP including Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga have called for the resignation of Malala as the SG.
