US Charges Man in Lamu Al Shabaab Attack

A 31-year-old American man linked to a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) attack in Lamu has been charged for allegedly supporting al shabaab militia group with materials and participating in terror attacks.

US Justice Department on Monday said that Maleek Jones, 31, traveled to Somalia where he received military training from al shabaab then became a fighter with the terror organisation.

Prosecutors said in a statement that Mr Jones appeared on two videos seized from a fighter of the group.

One video shows Jones holding a firearm with other militiamen who staged an attack in June 2015 on Kenya's military base in Lamu.

Somalia's al shabaab claimed the Lamu attack in which 11 militiamen were killed while two soldiers also lost their lives in the cross fire.

If convicted, Jones would be sentenced to life imprisonment.
