Residents of a village in Mumias County were left in shock after a corpse in a coffin caught fire.
A witness to the incident said the coffin lid burst open, revealing the fire which had burnt the deceased's legs, her dress and the interior area of the casket.
Locals in the area were quick to give superstitious interpretations to the incident, with some saying that the deceased's relatives had defied her dying interests. Her husband was accused of failing to build an iron sheet house which he had promised her before she died.
Others claimed that the woman was not happy with the house in which she was put while awaiting burial, therefore communicated her frustrations through the bizzare incident.
“It seems like the deceased did not like the house she was put in so we moved her to a different house,” said the village Chief Stephen Eroba.
The woman was to be buried on Saturday, but due to the occurrence the funeral was moved to Friday. The Wanga elders will, however, have to perform a ritual to protect the community from any curse.
