VIDEO: Police Nab Bags Of Sugar Being Smuggled Into Kenya

Security officers along the Kenya-Somalia border confiscated 141 bags of sugar that were being smuggled into the country on Thursday.

The sugar believed to be from Brazil was nabbed at Wemerer, in Dadaab, Garissa County.

The sugar, along with other goods were being ferried in a lorry bearing Somalia number plates.

The lorry driver is said to be a Somali national who has since been taken into police custody and is helping with investigations.

Garissa County Commissioner James Kiandi told K24 that a manhunt had been launched for two other suspects who had escaped.

This comes weeks after CORD leader Raila Odinga made allegations that cheap sugar was being smuggled into the country.

Mr Odinga said that KDF soldiers were bringing in the sugar from the port of Kismayo.

He further questioned the origin of sugar sold in supermarkets branded with the supermarkets' names yet the stores had no millers in the country.

The nabbed haul fuels the sugar debate that has been ongoing since reports emerged that President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a deal with his Uganda counterpart Yoweri Museveni to import sugar from Uganda.

Opposition leaders have voiced their disapproval over the alleged deal, saying it would kill the sugar companies in the country.

Deputy President William Ruto however defended the deal, saying it would prevent cartels from bringing in sugar into the country and passing it off as sugar from companies in Kenya.
