VIDEO: Teachers Receive More Support in Pay Battle

Teachers have received more backing in their bid to have the government honour their legally awarded pay rise.

The Trade Union Congress of Kenya (TUC-Kenya) threw its weight behind teachers and asked the government to pay the 50-60 per cent pay hike awarded by the Courts.

TUC-Kenya Organising Secretary Charles Mukhwaya, directed teachers not to go to work until they are paid their dues as ordered by the Supreme Court.

Mr Mukhwaya said the strike should go on until their pay is raised despite disrupting learning in some parts of the country.

He also urged the parents not to take their children to school until the matter is resolved.

Mukhwaya further stated that if the government continued to defy the court, TUC-Kenya would mobilise other workers to join in.

He also took a swipe at the Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia directing her to resign for failing to comply with court orders.

TUC-Kenya is the umbrella body for unions representing teachers, civil servants, lecturers and other workers.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) also joined the strike at their offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, with new sufurias labeled 'njaa' hunger.

Learning has been paralysed in various counties among them, Kisumu, Kisii, Mombasa, and Marsabit.
