Why CORD and Jubilee MPs Are in Contention Over Changing the Election Date

A Member of Parliament affiliated to the CORD coalition has introduced a motion seeking to move the next general election from August to December.

The bill, however, sparked a new wave of controversy pitting the members of the Jubilee alliance against their opposition counterparts.

While it would be expected for the bill to receive unanimous support from the legislators, since it allows for the extension of their term in office, the bill has created divisions within the coalitions.

CORD MPs claim that Jubilee intends to support the bill then introduce a clause seeking to extend the office term of IEBC commissioners beyond December.

The term of the current IEBC commissioners led by Mr Issack Hassan ends in November 2017.

According to a Standard report some Jubilee MPs are willing to back the Kenya Constitution Amendment Bill sponsored by ODM MP David Ochieng’ on condition that they should be allowed to introduce a clause for the extension of the term of the IEBC commissioners.

CORD has constantly expressed its dissatisfaction with the Isaack Hassan-led team, noting that the body is not fit to oversee the next general election.

Some of the ODM legislators have expressed reluctance in supporting one of their member-sponsored bill.

The opposition coalition is also suspicious that Jubilee is seeking to ‘hijack’ the bill to extend the term of the President in office.

The Ugenya legislator, however, has maintained that the bill has nothing to do with the extension of the office terms of the President and MPs.
