Why it May Soon Be Expensive to Eat in Nairobi

You may soon pay more for a cup of coffee or a plate of food at your favourite restaurant in Nairobi if a proposed law is enacted.

The Nairobi City County Finance Bill, 2015, seeks to double the amount of money supermarkets, restaurants and cafes pay for food hygiene license.

If the bill becomes law, the annual license fee will be doubled to allow the Nairobi County Government boost it's annual collections.

The changes proposed by Budget and Appropriations Committee Chairman, Mr Micheal Ogada, will see Supermarkets which currently pay Sh10,000, part away with Sh20,000.

Big retail stores with more than 100 employees, would pay Sh60,000 with restaurants and cafes getting their licences at Sh15,000 and Sh10,000 respectively, Business Daily reports.

Fast food eateries, will be expected to pay Sh7,000 from Sh5,000 while outside catering services will pay Sh7,000.

Upon implementation of the new changes, the county will then collect more than Sh11.5 Billion that was collected last year in revenues. On the other hand, the eateries are likely to pass the cost to the consumer.
