Why Jubilee MCAs Failed to Impeach Kidero

A section of Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) affiliated to the Jubilee coalition have dropped a bid to impeach Governor Evans Kidero over bribery allegations against him.

The MCAs had initially expressed interest in oustering Kidero who is alleged to have bribed Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi to influence the outcome of an election petition filed against him by Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu.

Karura MCA Mr Kamau Thuo clarified that they decided to withdraw the motion to eject Governor Kidero from office, upon realization that the move would interfere with the ongoing probe against Justice Tunoi; which also involves the Governor.

Mr Thuo, who was to sponsor the motion, revealed that County Assembly clerk Jacob Ngwele advised them that the move would be prejudicial to an ongoing case.

“The clerk advised us to drop it because the matter is with the tribunal, which is equivalent to the High Court. So discussing it would be prejudicial,” Thuo explained.

The Nairobi Governor has since maintained his innocence in the bribery allegations, going ahead to praise Justice Tunoi for the latter’s willingness to face the tribunal rather than resign.

“But on the one thing that pleases me, is when I read today that he would go through with a tribunal. I saw that there was a lot of pressure but if a man is innocent he needs to be heard. If he resigns without proper clarification people will assume that what was peddled was true,” Kidero remarked.

Governor Kidero also declined ever meeting Justice Tunoi in person.
