Why Pokot Leaders Want To Sue Electricity Plant, KenGen

Residents of West Pokot County have vowed to sue the Kenya Electricity Generating Company, KenGen, over compensation delays after they were displaced due to the construction of Turkwel power plant in 1980s.

Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto said that if the company does not compensate the residents they would move to court to seek justice.

Leaders criticized the power plant stating that the locals had not benefited from it since construction adding that the only advantage was to the company which was making millions of shillings.

“They take profit to Nairobi while the person on the ground is suffering...It is now upon them to do it or we take them to court,” Samuel Moroto stated.

Residents now want the company to carry out Corporate Social Responsibility in the area in order to uplift the lives of those affected by the plant.

Turkwel Power Station is one of the major hydro-electric power stations in Kenya. The plant was conceived as a multipurpose project comprising hydro-power, agricultural, fisheries and tourism development.
