Why Uhuru, Ruto Jubilee Party Will Not Be Launched

The much anticipated launch of the Jubilee Party will not take place after a consultative meeting by the steering committee submitted that the idea was faulty.

The party was to be launched officially on March 31, merging all political parties affiliated to the ruling coalition, but the fate is now thrown in the wind.

According to the Steering Committee's Co- Chair, Kiraitu Murungi, the launch could not be effected as they had faced a lot of resistance from some politicians and political parties associated with the coalition.

“Those holding party positions are afraid of loosing those seats and that is very understandable for us,” stated the Meru Senator.

The main parties whose dissolution were being targeted include, The National Alliance Party (TNA), United Republican Party (URP), Alliance Party of Kenya (APK), Democratic Party (DP) among others.

Kiraitu added that it would be risky to dissolve the Jubilee affiliate parties without making provisions for continuity of the presidency and governance.

“We don't want to throw the country into legal or political crisis,” mentioned Kiraitu.

On the other hand, a section of leaders led by Governors Isaac Rutto of Bomet and Peter Munya of Meru have been leading a rebellion against the party, terming the dissolution as dictatorial and non-inclusive.

The merger had been championed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to become the Jubilee coalition's political vehicle for the 2017 elections.
