Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi has directed vetting of all preachers conducting services in schools before they are allowed to minister.
Speaking during a workshop organised by the Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims (SUPKEM) and Islamic Religious Education (IRE), Matiangi stated that the freedom of worship should be accompanied with responsibility hence the need to audit the men of the cloth.
“The clearance should be made by religious leaders whose institutions the preachers belong to, for them to be allowed to step into any schools with the purpose of talking to students,” Matiang’i asserted.
The Education CS added that the rampant radicalization programmes should be halted and religious leaders ought to be involved in ensuring the same.
“Radicalism is not Islam, but a criminal ideology.” Matiangi stated.
The order by Matiangi follows numerous cases of youth being radicalized by religious leaders then lured to join the al shabaab militia group.

Matiangi has been waging a spirited fight against unacceptable tendencies in public learning institutions.
Last month, he made surprise visits to schools in Naivasha where a number of head teachers were caught unaware, with no explanations for the dilapidated state of their institutions.
The CS was angered by the devastating environment in classrooms, dormitories and kitchen areas ordering the management to promptly take action or face consequences.
