REVEALED: How ATM Details are Stolen at Petrol Stations

Motorists in Nairobi County have been cautioned against conmen at filling stations, following an incident in which an attendant was caught trying to scan pay card details of a customer at a station.

The staffer was busted on Monday at the Ridgeways Shell station, after the consumer noticed him trying to swap his ATM card on another skimming machine.

The Shell client, who nabbed the fraudster, took to social media to expose the suspects actions warning motorists to be cautious of a syndicate that was operating in the City and its environs.

“I gave the attendant my card to swipe but I noticed him running it under a small machine he was holding under the authorised machine,” said the client.

Upon questioning him, the staffer reportedly run away disposing the card skimmer he had been using to steal customer.

“I questioned what he was doing and he fled on foot. I was able to pursue and apprehend him after one kilometre of running,” he added

Through its social media pages, Shell Kenya group confirmed the report terming it unfortunate and apologised to its customers for the incident.

"Vivo Energy Kenya is aware of reports of an ATM Card details skimming with the purpose of performing fraudulent activities at Shell Ridgeways by a fuel attendant. We sincerely apologize to all our customers for this unfortunate incident," the company confirmed.

It also announced that the Ridgeways outlet had been closed with immediate effect and services of the retailer in-charge terminated, asking police to expedite investigations into the matter.
