Journalists Protest Over Attack by Nyamira County Officials

Nyamira journalists have accused officials in the County government of assaulting their colleagues and destroying some of their equipment.

The members of the fourth estate issued a statement claiming that three journalists had been beaten up by 10 county officers during the recently concluded Jamhuri Day celebrations.

The three are said to have been covering the event presided over by area governor John Nyagarama when they were reportedly attacked and their working tools taken away by the executives.

According to a statement from the group, the journalists who were assaulted included Denis Kirwa from Sahara Fm, Francis Orina and Dan Nyamanga who are freelancers.

"In the scuffle, the journalists sustained injuries while their items, an audio recorder, a camera and a notebook were snatched from them. The notebook was torn into pieces and the whereabouts of the recorder is not yet known," stated the journalists.

They further expressed fear over rising cases of attacks towards journalists calling on the Kenya Union of Journalists, Media Council of Kenya, the judiciary and the government to take action.

“We are perturbed by this incident. It is barbaric, archaic, naive and retrogressive, coming at a time when Kenyans are enjoying an enhanced democratic space and freedom of the press,” they affirmed.

The group further added that the victims had recorded statements with the police recommending for immediate action to be taken against the assailants.
