Car Wash Vendors in Nairobi Ordered to Stop Operations Immediately

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) on Tuesday ordered all car wash vendors in Nairobi to cease operations due to the four-month water rationing programme unveiled in the County.

In a press statement, the water company announced that it will take action against carwash owners and operators who will contravene the law and continue with daily operations.

This means that car owners will not be able to access normal carwash services offered at various public points hence will be compelled to look for other means.

On December 26, NCWSC Managing Director Philip Gichuki announced that Nairobi would face water shortage from January 1 to April 2017.

Mr Gichuki stated that this was due to failed rains in December. He further noted that as a result, Ndakaini Dam, which supplies most of Nairobi tap water, was left at only 48 per cent full.

"In view of the foregoing, it has become necessary for NCWSC to reduce water production by 16 percent effective 1st January 2017. This will enable the company to ration the available water in the reservoirs in order to sustain water supply to the City up to mid-April 2017 when the long rains are expected," the statement read in part.

The Company went ahead and released a timetable indicating when various areas in Nairobi will be affected by the ongoing water rationing programme.
