How Nairobi's Karen, Zimmerman, Donholm, Ngumba, Tena and Mugoya Estate Acquired Their Names

Nairobi's Karen estate, an affluent neighbourhood, was once a coffee plantation owned by a Danish Author Karen Blixen-Finecke aka Isak Dinesen.

The posh estate would later be named after the Danish author.

Mugoya Estate in South C acquired its name from James Isabirye Mugoya, a Ugandan Engineer-cum-businessman.

Mugoya's closeness to former President Daniel Arap Moi's family helped him acquire housing projects in Embakasi and South C estates.

Moi's exit from power, however, saw some of Mugoya's tenders cancelled forcing him to relocate to Uganda.

Zimmerman Estate aka Zimma was named after German Pioneer industrialist Karl Fritz Paul Zimmerman. Mr Zimmerman ran Zimmerman International a taxidermy factory (mounting the skins of animals for display) that was closed after 33 years following the ban on hunting. The estate that developed on the premises of the factory carries the name to date.

Ngumba Estate, located next to the Garden City Mall, was named after Kenyan businessman Andrew Gumba. Mr Ngumba served as a Nairobi Mayor in the 1970's and was also involved in insurance, real estate and banking.

Ngumba's empire crumbled but his real estate business gave rise to the modern Ngumba.

Donholm Estate started as a dairy farm named after Glasgow Donholm where its owner James Kerr Watson hailed from. Donholm Dairy farm previously occupied all the land from the City Stadium area to modern Donholm Estate.

Tena Estate is an acronym for Teachers of Nairobi Sacco which had intended to raise residential houses all over Eastlands area in Nairobi.
