3 People Arrested For Reselling Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Train Tickets at Higher Prices

Three people have been arrested by the police after it was discovered that they have been reselling tickets of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train.

Coast Regional Director Nelson Marwa stated that the police were on the lookout for fraudsters taking advantage of travellers by selling tickets 42 percent above the set price.

“These fraudsters buy the tickets in large sums to create an artificial shortage and later sell to unsuspecting travellers at Sh 1000 for the economy class,” he stated.

He explained that the conmen were stealing from Kenyans in broad daylight as they situate themselves at the train stations in Nairobi and Mombasa terminals.

“They pose as families travelling in large numbers and one can buy up to twenty tickets and when other passengers go to buy tickets they are told they are finished and have no option but to buy from the conmen at exorbitant prices,” Marwa warned.

He, however, assured Kenyans that the police were on high alert and would deal with the fraudsters.

Marwa also cautioned car owners from parking their vehicles alongside the railway track as it posed a security threat.

The current prices for the economy class of the train are Sh 700 and those for the business class retail at Sh 3000.
